If you could become a little mouse and observe life at Light of Hope Orphanage, you would notice the excitement level rising quite a bit around the last week of April. You become a bit curious as to what is causing the excitement, so you decide to pay more careful attention to the things going on around the place. April 30th arrives and you finally find out what was causing all the excitement. Of course, CHILDREN’S DAY!!
Here in Mexico Children’s Day is celebrated the 30th of April. The main factor for there being a lot of excitement is because at the orphanage Children’s Day and Track and Field day go hand in hand. Children’s Day/Track and Field day involves racing, throwing and jumping. So, at around 6:30am (or earlier) the children are up and ready, adrenalin racing.
Arriving at the running track around 7:00am, the children are divided into three groups according to the their ages.(There are also two adult groups, a mens’ group and a ladies’ group)
After a short time of prayer the fun begins. Racing comes first with the smallest group starting off by running the sprint. All the groups do likewise consecutively. After the sprint is finished, the long race(400 meters. The small group runs 100 meters) begins. There is also a wheelchair race which takes place after the long race. The first, second, third and forth place people from each group, except the smallest group and wheelchair group, are then grouped off in to four different teams. The four teams then compete in a relay race passing a baton from one team member to the next.
After the races are finished, everyone heads back to the orphanage for brunch. Following brunch is the high jump which then is followed by the long throw. After supper and prizes, to end the day, everyone sits back and watches the video put together of the day’s activities(which is always a highlight). Then everyone, tired and weary, goes to bed for a needed night of sleep.
